The 29th Annual Sag Harbor Cup is Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011. The Notice Of Race (NOR) is available on the ELIYA website: www.elisailing.org.

BYC hopes to raise money for it's Youth Sailing Program, but has lowered the entry cost from last year to encourage more racing entrants.

If you hope to race, but are waiting 'til the last minute to decide (hard getting crew - maybe deciding between spinnaker or cruising canvas), then email or fax the completed ELIYA race entry form to me (my info in signature below) by Wednesday and then get it into the mail with your check and 2011 PHRF Certificate to Carol Morse (address in the NOR) by Wednesday night. If you want to enter later than I just described, then you should call Carol at 631-283-6613 or me at 631-287-3205. If you have already turned in a 2011 PHRF Certificate to me for BYC racing, then there is no need to send it again.

Upcoming races are easy to see on the ELIYA website (www.elisailing.org), so take a look.

It has been suggested that I mention a rule that is sometimes overlooked by some sailors: Some sailors like to push out and/or hold their sails by hand or by using a boat pole, but Rule 50.2 makes it clear that a pole must be attached to the mast. Another rule that is often overlooked is 49.2. It says: "When lifelines are required by the class rules or the sailing instructions they shall be taut, and competitors shall not position any part of their torsos outside them, except briefly to perform a necessary task. On boats equipped with upper and lower lifelines of wire, a competitor sitting on the deck facing outboard with his waist inside the lower lifeline may have the upper part of his body outside the upper lifeline." So a crew member can't hold onto the shrouds, and lean out over the lifelines holding out the clew of a sail for more than a short period of time.

The ELIYA website has been updated to include a US Sailing Protest form (in the "Forms" section). You might want to print one out and keep it on the boat. Just like one might take along an umbrella to keep away the rain, maybe this will keep away the need to use a protest form.

Skippers and Others,

There was a protest filed Wednesday night by Big Boat against Skoot for Skoot returning to the BW through the North Channel unlike the rest of the fleet that returned through the South Channel. The Sailing Instruction 7.5 is a bit ambiguous. I believe the intention when it was being written was that the boats would only go through the North Channel if "CS" was listed as a mark of the course, but the way it is written could let you interpret it so if your boat is using the North Channel as a leg of the course, you don't need to honor the Gov't Buoys of the South Channel while you are using the North Channel. Some people might like the instructions to stay that way so that boats can make their own choice as to which way to return (although going from "CS" to N12 could put many boats in danger of touching bottom). The RC boat can always add 10A to starboard if they want all of the boats to use the South Channel or "CS" (and perhaps N14 for safety) if they want all of the boats to use the North Channel.

Anyway, Big Boat never put up a red flag or notified the RC boat at the finish line, so they are withdrawing the protest.

I know the Purple Haze, Witchli and Skidip have sent in their PHRF Certificate applications to Tony Dill, but I would like them mailed, emailed or faxed to me ASAP once they get them back from Tony. Buckaroo needs to send in that PHRF application NOW, if they haven't already.

Big Boat turned in a protest against Skoot for going through the North Channel instead of the South Channel. They have withdrawn their protest.

Skippers and others,

I have been notified that the BYC BOD's are hosting a Chili competition/party after the 1st Summer Series race on Wednesday, June 1. Hopefully each boat will enter a Chili. Dark 'n Stormies and soft drinks will be provided.

The BYC BOD is hoping that once again this year some boats will step forward and donate toward the keg's of beer for parties on Wednesday nights. I believe at the Commissioning Party Chris DiSunno said to contact him and he would let you know how you can pay for the keg, but that he would take care of getting the keg set up. The Summer Series NOR and Sailing Instructions are attached. If you haven't signed up for the Summer Series yet, please get the Race Entry form from www.breakwateryc.org and get it to me soon, so that I can get a Scratchsheet out to the racers by May 31st.

I've attached the BYC Race Entry Form for all 3 Series (Don't forget there is a discount if you pay for all 3 series by May 6th.), also the May Cup NOR, and the May Cup Sailing Instructions.

I hope all will get their 2010 PHRF Certificates and Entries in as soon as possible, so the results will be as accurate as possible each Wednesday night. Tony Dill is sending out the PHRF Form and info this week, but it is also downloadable from the PBSA website (www.PBSA.us) and soon should be available from the ELIYA website: www.elisailing.org. You might consider joining ELIYA (for only $25) and save $5 on you PHRF Certificate. The ELIYA membership form is available on the ELIYA website. If you plan on racing in the Sag Harbor Cup, the Maycroft Cup, and the Whitebread, then you would only need to do one more race from the ELIYA Championship Racing Circuit to qualify for the Series. The dates for the races will shortly be updated in the center section of the ELIYA home page and last year's descriptions of the races are on the right in the Offshore section ("Offshore Calendar"). The only race that wasn't covered in last year's descriptions is the SIYC 125th Anniversary Race which will start in Orient Harbor or Gardiner's Bay and will finish at Dering Harbor.There is also a link to US Sailing on the bottom right, to make it easy for you to become a member or renew your membership in US Sailing. There are also links to the other YC's in the East End.

I'll have to let you know later if anyone will be calculating the tentative race results each Wednesday evening at the clubhouse and if a prize will be given to the 1st place boats that night. I also don't know yet if there will be a keg of beer and/or any party food there. I think Jane Babcook ( JBabcook@Corcoran.com ) is still the one to contact if you want to contribute to any parties, but not me.

Impromptu's PHRF certificate had an error when it was first sent out so the new certificate puts the number back to last year's rating, thus the races from 6/16 to 7/14 are now reupdated as of 7/29 to put the results back where they were. The only placing change is on 6/23. Eventually they will be all fixed on the website, but you all got the original correct results with Impromptu's PHRF numbers as 120 and 143.

A bit after 8:30, all the boat names that are signed up for the Summer Series were put in a hat and when a name was drawn, if someone from that boat was there, they picked one of 6 gifts donated by Atlantis Weather Gear (a shirt, a vest, a belt, & 3 hats). This will happen again for the next 2 Wednesdays. The tentative results were then announced and glasses given to the 1st place (w/penalty) boats.

Bruce & I may go off cruising and could miss the next 2 Wednesdays racing, so results might not get out to everyone in the usual manner. Sometimes, when we are at marinas, email is hard to send to a lot of people at once, so I might have to rely on the webmaster to get them on the website and wait to send them out to all of you, when we get back.

Oz Trophy Race with females at the helm

Don't forget next Wednesday is the Oz Trophy Race with females at the helm (Ziti & Chianti party after thrown by Roxanne & Buckaroo - BYO drinks). Thanks to those that have given me the names of your female skippers. I am setting up a scratch sheet. Are there some boats that would like to race in Div 3 (non-spin) for the night instead of your current Spin division? Please let me know if you would like to switch to Div 3. There are no penalties in the scoring of the Oz Race.

The Oz Race (females at the helm) is a bit less than 2 weeks away on Wednesday, July 7. If you are signed up for the Summer Series, then you don't need to fill out a Race Entry form, but I would like to know the name of your female that will be at the helm, so that I can get them on the scratch sheet and results. Please get the female name to me by Monday 7/5.

Roxanne and Buckaroo are inviting the crew of those boats that race in the Oz Race to a Ziti and Chianti party at the BYC clubhouse after the race. Of course, if you prefer to drink something else or want to help supply the Chianti, then bring your own drink.

Rules Seminar Sunday 5/23/10

.....reminder, RACING RULES seminar will be held on Sun., May 23rd at the Shelter Island Yacht Club from 1:30 - 3:30pm followed by light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. This will be presented by Jim Ryan, a certified USSailing Judge and expert sailor! Cost is $5 for all SIYC and/or ELIYA members and $10 for non-members. SIYC members can charge to the club, non members can pay at the door, but PLEASE RSVP to lkimmelmann@siyc.com so that we can get an accurate head count in advance. Copies of the Racing Rules (for $15) and the Handy Rules Guide (for $5) will be available for sale at the door.

Also, coming up will be the Race Management Seminar on Sat., June 5th with Steve Purdy for those who want to be certified race officers. More details on that coming soon!!

Revised BYC 5/5 results

Skippers and Others,

There are a few changes to last Wednesday's race (also attached - click here for pdf).

First, Loki changed from non-spin to spin and I forgot to change their PHRF to their spinnaker rating. This did make a difference in the placing positions.

Secondly, you may also notice that I changed the starting time from 6:05 to 6:06:52. The finish times on the timesheet were correct (same as our boat's GPS). This change was done because the handheld GPS that was used on the RC boat was off a bit at the start (new batteries and maybe hadn't been on long enough before the start). I had taken down our GPS time at the start and finish and our elapsed time from our countdown timer and our elapsed times were the same using those 2 methods. Anyway the placing positions didn't change when I put in the corrected start time, but the differences in corrected times when comparing how much one boat beat another changed slightly.

Thirdly, I forgot to put Two Potato in as a DNC for the race.

Fourthly, I've received 2 more PHRF's so their numbers are no longer highlighted.

Incase you weren't at the Commissioning on 4/24/10, below is something you may want to let your crew know about. Also, anyone that was once a member of BYC, but let their membership lapse, I'm told for this year only, they may rejoin without paying the "One-time Assessment" fee of $250.

5-5-10 Race Results

The 5/5 tentative race results are below and in the pdf attachment which gives the better print out. The yellow PHRF numbers are last year's numbers. I don't have official recent numbers for Loose Fish.

If anymore boats want to get the $30 discount by signing up for all 3 BYC Series, then you should get your check and completed form into the mail today or tomorrow.

I believe the 5/22 Montauk Race is not happening, since we didn't get much interest responding.

I believe the BYC BOD's plans to have a nice party after the race next week. There will be a keg of beer, and I'm not sure what else, but I'm sure I'll find out before next Wednesday and will let you know.

I have received a weird mix of entry parts for the May Cup: some forms not signed, some with and some w/o checks (one check to ELIYA and one not signed yet), no official 2010 PHRF's yet and some telling me they are racing by voice but no email confirmation as I asked, so I'm not sure I remember who told me.

Our mast wasn't up by noon today, but we got a call at 6pm saying it is up, so tomorrow, I will have to do some work on the Wave Equation to get her ready to race tomorrow night. I will come in to the dinghy dock area and clubhouse sometime between 4:30 and 5:00 to pick-up any more completed (and signed) forms and checks.

I need 2010 PHRF's from everyone, but will use last year's numbers for now.

So far I think racing in spin (Div 1) are:
Gossip - check in mail
Ice-Nine - need waiver signed, check in mail
Instant Karma
Roxanne
Wave Equation
White Lightning

I think Osprey and Buckaroo are racing, but I have nothing in writing.

Skippers & others,

The Race Committee Chairman, Olaf, and myself want to remind all Wednesday night racers that we want to keep racing safe, so if you find yourself at the start being closed out at the RC Boat by a leward boat, then be prepared to tack away to avoid a domino effect of collisions or fouls. In other words, don't barge.

I've had a request to have the RC Boat change the starting order to Div 3, Div 2, & then Div 1, with the reasoning being that then the boats would finish more together (slower boats getting a head start). I've discussed it with a few people and one worry is changing things up might cause confusion, another is that the slowest boats in Div. 2 and Div. 3 might get rolled by Div. 1 boats, but the faster boats in Div. 2 & 3 might not get rolled and therefore could have an advantage. As I looked at the PHRF #'s in Div. 2 & 3, I notice that Div. 2 actually has the slowest boats, so then should we order it Div 2, Div 3, Div 1? Let me know what you think. I'm happy to keep it the way it is, but we're receptive to change if you want it.

I've attached the more printable pdf format of the results.

You'll note that Roxanne's PHRF number is 5 lower than usual. Their One-design spinnaker was damaged and needs a little time to be repaired, so Tony Dill has said that they should be penalized 5 points while they need to use their larger spinnaker.

Breakaway did start with Division 3, but the kids really wanted to fly the chute, so they did. Their results aren't figured into the Summer Series, so I put a J-80's spin PHRF rating down to get their corrected time for them, so they can compare how they did in both Div 2 & Div 3. Thanks Drevet for taking the Pierson H.S. Sailing Team out on Breakaway.

OZ TROPHY RACE

July 8th, 2009 Breakwater Yacht Club will host the 15th annual Oz Trophy Race. The Race, traditionally sailed the Wednesday after the 4th of July, will be sponsored this year by Dear Plum (www.dearplum.com), a fashion company specializing in beach/boat bathing suit cover-ups. A critical eligibility requirement is that all yachts have a female helmsman from the warning gun to the finish line. The race will be held in Major’s Cove outside of the breakwater in Sag Harbor. 1st place winners in each division will receive a gift from Dear Plum.

Hosts Black Seal Sprit Fest

May 30th and 31st, Breakwater Yacht Club of Sag Harbor played host to the Black Seal Sprit Fest Regatta featuring two days of racing on Noyac Bay. This 3rd annual regatta featured class starts for J80 and J109 yachts and a PHRF Division for all other participating yachts.

Gosling Black Seal Rum was a key sponsor of the Regatta, donating spirits and prizes. Other sponsors were J Boats, Bruce Tait & Associates, Johnstone Yachts, North Sails and Doyle Sails (Long Island).

Prizes were awarded after Sunday’s races at the Breakwater Yacht Club. In the J80 one design class Hokus Pokus (Captain Don Suter) took first place followed by Breakaway (Pierson HS Sailing Team) in 2nd place and Margaret (Captain Bud Rogers) in 3rd place.

In the J109 one design class, Gossip (Captain Greg Ames) took first place followed by Day Labor (Captain Mark Gonzalez) and Caminos (Captain Tina Fillipelii) in second and third place respectively.

In the Performance Handicap Fleet, Roxanne (Captains Wayne and Carol Morse) finished first. Buckaroo (Captain Bruce Tait) finished second and One Ring Circus (Captain Paul Pomerantz) finished third.

BREAKWATER YACHT CLUB MAY SERIES

Breakwater YC has announced the winners of its 2009 May Cup Series. The May Cup consists of four weekly races where each yacht is allowed to “throw out” its worst performance, creating a three race series. In Division 1 (Spinnaker) first place honors went to Gossip (Captains Kenny and Ames). Scoot (Captain Jim Vos) took second place and Purple Haze (Captains Oldak and Kalish) finished third.

White Lightning (Captain Jim Smyth) took first place in Division 2 (non-Spinnaker). Impromptu (Captain Sean Leary) finished in second place and Wave Equation (Captains Dinsmore and Worthing) took third place.

June 3rd begins Breakwater’s 2009 Summer Series with Wednesday night races held until September 2nd. All races are governed by the U.S. Sailing Association’s Rules of Sailing. Races are run in Shelter Island Sound with a starting time of 6 PM. A yacht’s best scoring for 70% of the races is used to determine Summer Series results. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each division.

This May, Breakwater Yacht Club, will be hosting a J-80 league, where
crew and skippers can come together for four Sundays starting May 3rd
at 2pm and sail the very fast, very fun J-80. We hope to have 3-5
boats and a race course set up to challenge all the participants to
learn new skills and tune up old ones for the upcoming Black Seal
Spritfest race at the end of May. Registration is limited to the
number of boats we get x 5, so it will be a first come first served
registration. Registration is a modest $40 and a registration form
